Founder of Burning Man, Larry Harvey, Passes

by Saphir Lewis

“This may be the essential genius of Burning Man:
Out of nothing, we created everything.”
— Larry Harvey

Our founder, friend, and original instigator, Larry Harvey has passed away. Larry suffered a massive stroke at his home on the morning of April 4. We resolutely held out for a miracle. If there was anyone tenacious, strong-willed and stubborn enough to come back from this challenge, it was Larry. Though we all hoped he would recover, he passed peacefully this morning at 8:24am in San Francisco, with members of his family at his side. [Read more…]

Epic Summer Road Trips: Your Guide To A Festival Nomad Summer

by Saphir Lewis

Our Tipsby bettyandkora

It’s summer: you’re coasting along the highway – a sweetly rumbling engine and good tunes in your ear, the summer wind on your face. Imagine spending an entire summer in nature, living simply, constantly seeing new things and meeting new people, and consistently being surrounded by incredible music and art. You’ll spend weeks in environments that encourage free self expression, where you can indulge in the luxury of being your truest self. This is the appeal of a nomad summer spent road-tripping from festival to festival.

Adventures are magical things that leave you changed forever; they take you outside of your comfort zone and teach you things about yourself that you might never have otherwise discovered. Through this lifestyle you start to remember what’s really important in life, what’s important to you.

After 7 months of preparation, my partner, J, and I are embarking on [Read more…]

It Could Have Been Any One of Us

by Saphir Lewis

by Gabe Meline – a beautiful article written by a friend of those lost in Oakland….
There are no words to convey the heartbreak felt by those closest to the Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse fire. At the moment, 36 are confirmed dead, with search crews still sorting through the ashes of the site. As stories and details of the fire are shared, and while thousands await news of missing loved ones, a phrase keeps coming up: “It could have been any one of us.”

For those of us involved in artist spaces one way or another, the tragedy is impossible to process. I, too, have been inside a warehouse like that, we think, living, working, dancing into the night. According to the Oakland Fire Department, this fire has taken more lives than any in the city’s history.

One Loving Family

by Saphir Lewis

balibranding

Right now more than a dozen of our designers, your community members who make clothes and sell them at festival, are in Bali together….where they have a shared studio and work closely with families of tailors who make your clothes. The tailors are well paid, loved and cared for, and they’ve all been together for more than a decade….some even two. This is what you support when you buy from your own community….and what better time than for gift giving. Everything is hand made, is high quality, is eco-responsible and made for YOU with LOVE.

Interview with Jason Cohen, founder of Unifier Festival

by Saphir Lewis

.jason bio shot from illuminationUnifier Festival is coming up soon, in Western Mass. Its a deeper, more intentional gathering than most and one you won’t want to miss. Founder Jason Cohen has an exciting story to tell, and one you will want to be part of…I spoke with him on May 22, 2016. [Read full coverage & photos of the festival here]

Saphir – Hi Jason, tell me a little about your own history, that led you to establish Unifier.

Jason – Well, I’m a musician foremost and I was always fascinated with improvisational music that gave me the ability to check out of my head and go into a flowing trance state on the piano. That’s where I started to find my unique voice as a musician. Then I began to have a romantic connection to the accordion before I ever played it. Something about being able to play outdoors, I was a little envious of guitar players that could play around fires or out in the woods and eventually I picked up an accordion and started playing trance music. Susan Sarandon brings Timothy Leary’s ashes to Burning Man

by Saphir Lewis

Timothy-Leary
BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev., Sept. 6 (UPI) —
Actress Susan Sarandon brought some of the late writer Timothy Leary‘s ashes to the Burning Man art and music festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert this weekend.

Leary, who died in 1996 at the age of 75 after a battle with prostate cancer, was memorialized following a procession and ceremonial burning of his ashes, USA Today reported Sunday.

“I think he’d be so happy. I think he would have loved the chaos [of Burning Man.] He would have loved it,” the newspaper quoted Sarandon, once one of Leary’s closest friends, as saying. “And all these people honoring him with LSD.”

Sarandon, 68, was one of several people who received some of Leary’s ashes when he died. Most of his remains were launched into outer space in 1997, but Sarandon said she kept some.

“When I went to Burning Man last time, that’s when I thought I’d bring him back here,” Sarandon revealed.

A TRANSFORMATIONAL FESTIVAL refers to cultural transformation or the re-invention of humanity on earth. These are not your ordinary music events. We are building a culture of caring – for each other, ourselves, our neighbors, our planet. These gatherings are collaborative open-sourced villages, devoted to experimentation and inspired co-creation of the world we want to live in. And we believe that YOU, that everyone, has gifts to bring to the table!

FESTIVAL FIRE is here to nourish that dream.
