Keeping with our pursuit of up and coming projects at Burning Man this fall…comes Interstellar Emissary. This is another one that didn’t get fully funded and could still use your help. We think its super cool and is quite worthy!
We’re Building an Interstellar Emissary!
Interstellar Emissary is an homage to the Golden Record on the Voyager Spacecraft. And the Desert Wizards of Mars are bringing it to Burning Man in 2015.
Interstellar Emissary is about space. It’s about science. It’s a place to sit and think. It’s a place to talk and dance. It’s a gateway and a beacon to Black Rock Observatory. It honors and celebrates the magnificent work that created the Golden Record.
Golden Record? What’s that?
The real Voyager Golden Record was launched in 1977 and is now out in space somewhere far beyond Pluto. Interstellar Emissary looks exactly like the Golden Record, except ours is way bigger, is made of lucite, and it glows with a rainbow of LED lights!
The Golden Record is a phonograph record (ask your parents) containing sounds and images of Earth, and NASA/JPL launched it into space in hopes that intelligent extraterrestrial life, or possibly future humans, would find it and be able to learn about life on Earth.
Our Interstellar Emissary will include the same sounds as the original Golden Record. Yes, you’ll be able to hear the very same sounds that aliens will hear!
We’re taking Interstellar Emissary to Burning Man 2015 where it will be a beacon in deep playa. As you approach the Interstellar Emissary, sensors will cause the lights to glow more brightly. Continued motion will cause the colors to change — you will be actively participating in the creation of the experience.
