It’s been half a century since the 60s, and while the dreams of activists, artists, hippies, and seekers from that time did not change the prevailing zeitgeist overnight, the seed that was planted by those countercultural pioneers has continued to grow, and today is flourishing in a brilliant array of new ways. One of the most important channels for this push towards a more sustainable, heart-centered, and passionate way of life is the transformational festival movement. Burning Man holds a unique place amongst these new types of gatherings, being the most massive and one of the most radical, but there are now dozens of events across the globe that are inviting participants to awaken their inner dreamer and burst into a new way of being that springs from the bliss of self-expression and community interaction.
Here at Ignite, we were honored to have the opportunity to speak with someone who has been connected to this movement from the beginning. Saphir Lewis is the founder of Festival Fire, a portal for the transformational festival community, including news, event calendars, an annual festival guide, and an online store featuring top designers from the gatherings.
Hi Saphir! Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us. Can you give us a little background about yourself and your involvement with transformational festivals? What brought you into this movement?
Saphir: I am a double Pisces and very passionate about building a world where “caring is the new currency.” This work began for me at 5 years old when my Grandmother walked me across Boston Commons and I saw a “Love-In,” a small gathering, happening there. I still remember the young guy with a guitar and the girl with flowers in her long, blonde hair. There were maybe 20 or 30 sitting together in the grass on picnic blankets. Right then, I saw the shared vision, the “Golden Dream” that we in this movement devote our lives to: a kind and caring, clean and safe world for everyone. Even as a tiny kid, I decided right then and there, that I would either find it or build it……
