Optimism is a choice, not a reaction.
One of the best ideas we came across over the holidays was taking one word, and making it your mantra for the year. As we all know, New Year’s resolutions aren’t very effective (don’t worry it’s not just you, the science suggests it’s impossible for most people).
Having one word is better. It can act as a touchstone for many areas in your life, whether it’s health, relationships, or work, and you can adapt it to circumstances as they change around you.
Our word for 2018 is easy.

As festival culture becomes more ingrained into mainstream society, businesses will of course direct their marketing and ideas towards festival lovers. That means lots of gadgets and products designed for those who’ll be camping, or spending a day at one of the many events that occur all over the world.
Some people like to have a back-to-basics experience when they’re at a festival: no-frills, no gadgets, just a tent, a sleeping bag and the bare essentials. Others go to the opposite extreme, bringing everything including the kitchen sink with them, or showing off with an array of useless gear. Most of us float somewhere in the middle of those two ends of the spectrum, wanting some comfort and convenience but also happy to engage in a challenging, enriching experience.
One of the best ways to kick that yucky feeling of helplessness is to dust yourself off and take action. In the wake of the horrific mass shooting at Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, an immeasurable amount of emotional and monetary support from all corners of the globe has come to the aid of the hundreds of victims and their families. The global festival community has mobilized in myriad ways as well. It’s been an incredible thing to witness.
Right now, debates over gun control, mental health, terrorism, and festival security are raging in the media and in Washington, though there is still no telling how much this terrible incident will change anything. On the ground, however, change is more fast-moving. Donating blood, giving to funds set up for victims, and lending emotional support for those who are on the front lines in hospitals, task forces, and other groups working around the clock to right this terrible, terrible wrong are crucial ways we can all help.
We could all use a little bit of happy cheer, its been a rough week in the world…blow this up to full screen and treat yourself for a minute or two. Released today, in 1983.
Love this clip from Pacific Fire Gathering last weekend, posted by DJ Nevers. PFG is a small retreat, just 1-300 people, to share skills in fire spinnng, poi, juggling, hooping and all sorts of Flow Arts…to learn new tricks, take classes, train together in a sweet outdoor environment for 3 days. See our Flow Arts Calendar for gatherings like this near you….
I’m so excited about all the new designers that I found at Eclipse, to join the store. These shimmering bells are one of my faves from that adventure.
